Harlem Metro Derail causes major interruption

A morning metro ride for the commuters turned into a chaotic scene when a section of a packed subway train derailed and careened into a wall in Harlem on Tuesday.

The incident forced hundreds of New Yorkers to evacuate and walk underground through the smoke and darkness.

The train was just outside the 125th Street station when the emergency break automatically turned on. The train bucked forward and backward, causing two of the train's eight cars to derail and scrape the side of the wall.

At least 34 people were injured in the incident, including a little baby. Officials said that most of the injuries were due to smoke inhalation and none were life threatening.

The incident caused a power outage affecting all six tracks from West 119th Street to West 125th Street.

“The train was peeled open like a can opener,” said Paul Navarro, track division chairman for the Transport Workers Union, after visiting the accident site.

The metro derailment marks the latest in a series of subway accidents in the city that have caused chaos among the commuters and calls for a full overhaul of the aging system.

The City Council announced that its Transportation Committee will hold an oversight hearing to “closely examine where the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) has fallen short.”

Governor Cuomo recently introduced a bill that would give him control of the MTA board to address ongoing issues with the subway system. But neither Governor Cuomo nor Mayor Blasio showed up at the accident site.
