
On Tuesday, 31st January, 2017, a former New Jersey man has been charged with threatening to kill the former President Barack Obama.The Secret Service says that, an indictment was filed charging William Peterman, Jr., formerly of Medford Lakes, New Jersey, more recently of Beaufort, South Carolina.
According to the indictment of Secret Service, on 10th January, 2017, Peterman allegedly posted on his Facebook page saying that he "will kill" Obama.
The Secret Service says that,"Law enforcement agencies as a whole, take such online based threats seriously and they can easily evolve into federal criminal charges for those individuals making them."
Peterman, if convicted, then he faces a statutory maximum sentence of five years in prison, a possible fine of $250,000, a period of supervised release, and $100 for special assessment.

In a statement, James Henry, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service Philadelphia Field Office said, "This case and the resulting indictment demonstrates the Secret Service's proactive stance investigating threats against those who are sworn to protect. When brought to our attention - whether in person, electronically or written, the Secret Service takes every threat very seriously."
The case was investigated by United States Secret Service, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, and the Mercer County Sheriff's Office and is being prosecuted by the Assistant United States Attorney Anita Eve.
