Indian-American Yale student earned Soros Fellowships

An Indian-American student has been awarded with a prestigious Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships, that is designed to support  graduate students who have indicated "originality" and "creativity" in their lives.

A student at the Yale University, Durga Thakral is one among  30 recipients  of the 2016 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships. According to a university statement, her award aimed to support work towards an  MD/PhD in genetics from the Yale School of Medicine.

Durga Thakral said that, her work with communities with minimal healthcare resources has realize her the "dire need for better access to medical care and affordable biomedical devices."

The award was created by the Hungarian immigrants Paul and Daisy Soros in  1997. The awards aimed to support the graduation students, who were born abroad, but have become  naturalized citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

The statement said that, award recipient must have "demonstrated creativity, originality, and initiative in one or more aspects of her or his life," and "a commitment to and capacity for accomplishment that has required drive and sustained effort," as well.
