In New Jersey, US, a 21- year-old Indian origin student of Rutgers University was shot with a gun and was killed in a shooting incident. His roommate got seriously injured. The incident happened at their apartment nearby the campus of the school.

A spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said that, Shani Patel who is a junior economics major at the university was shot and killed at off campus near an apartment. Authorities said that the Patel’s roommate was badly injured, but his identity was not released.

According to a report of ‘The New York Times’, the police Department of Rutgers said that, it was not a random shooting and 12,000 students who are being served at the down town campus were not under threat. The incident is being investigated by the authorities of New Jersey.

After that incident, no identification of suspects and no arrests took place, said the Essex County Prosecutor’s office and Newark Public Safety Director. But the investigation “is active and ongoing”, they added.

The Rutgers University’s Newark community, Chancellor Nancy Cantor said,,“While law enforcement still investigating and we understand that it was not a random act that led to Shani’s death, it is a shock to lose a member of our community under any circumstances.”

She added, “Our deepest condolences go out to Shani’s family and to all who knew him as a student, colleague, or friend.”
